Dr Rena LaFrance MD FRCPC is a Medical director at the pediatric centre for weight and health, consulting physician for the Stollery Children’s hospital, and has a private therapeutic practice for women’s relationships with love and sexuality.
We talked about the her undergrad and beyond, discussed some of the challenges leading up to her medical practice and dove into her fitness journey paying tribute to the one and only Dean Somerset.
She spoke about the challenges of residency in which you end up not taking as good of care of yourself as you might like and how that contrasted with the pandemic we’ve been experiencing in which self care has been imperative for survival and yet constantly changing - looking different for each individual.
We talked about the importance of setting boundaries both in what you are willing to put up with and in how you treat yourself.
Sometimes we have to be okay with being honestly just okay - or maybe struggling and not feeling great but alive. We need to make it normal to tell people that we are struggling and feel safe in doing so. We can’t have a stigma surrounding medication for mental health or therapy or any care that our body may need to keep us alive. The amount of emotional intelligence the last year and a half has called upon those of us who were up to the task is like nothing we’ve ever experienced.
We discussed how dangerous misinformation can be and the impacts the past few years will have on people.
Every action we take in our lives builds up to something more significant than we may give credit towards.
